Butterfly Activities and Crafts for Kids

There are so many fun things to do with butterflies and caterpillars with your child.

  • Butterfly crafts: Make butterfly wings out of paper plates, paint rocks to look like butterflies, or make butterfly puppets. These are all fun and easy ways to get creative and learn about butterflies.
  • Butterfly gardening: Plant some flowers that butterflies like. You can also plant some plants that caterpillars like, so you can watch them turn into butterflies. It’s super cool to see how they change!
  • Butterfly watching: Go for a walk in a park or nature preserve and see if you can spot any butterflies. Bring a field guide to help you figure out what kind of butterflies they are.
  • Butterfly release: If you’re feeling brave, you can raise butterflies from caterpillars and then release them back into the wild. It’s a great way to see the life cycle of a butterfly up close.
  • Butterfly stories: Read some books about butterflies to your kids. This is a fun way to learn more about butterflies and how awesome they are.

We’re a big butterfly family and spend time creating learning opportunities for our kids to include butterflies and caterpillars. We’ve even planted a butterfly garden in our yard.

Here’s a photo of one of our monarch releases with my youngest daughter.

Here’s a peek at some of the photos we’ve been able to take in our backyard while creating a garden for Monarchs to help protect them. Sadly they are now on the endangered species list. Consider planting milkweed this year in your garden to help support our monarch.

This year we encourage you to create a butterfly waystation habitat to support these beautiful butterflies!

The world of nature is always waiting to be explored, so keep seeking opportunities to marvel at the delicate dance of butterflies in your backyard and beyond. Let curiosity continue to guide your adventures, and may the joy of discovery always flutter alongside you.
